Limnos

Limnos is the eight biggest island of Greece to an extent of 476 km and the fourth in coastal length. It is in the North Aegean, in Thracian sea among Mount Athos, Samothraki, Imvros and Lesvos. With Agios Efstratios consist the province of Limnos of Lesvos municipality. Capital and main port of Limnos is Mirina that was named after the first wife of the first king of the island, Thoanta. By 1995 Mirina was called Kastro, a name that prevailed during the later Byzantine era and informally it is still called like that by the older Limnious. It is about a volcanic island, which although has no forests, has extensive fertile plains harvested in grains and vineyards.

The bay of Moudros is of the safest natural ports of Greece and East Mediterranean. It is about a remarkable natural reserve with rich fish fauna as well as being rich in shellfish, like clams, mussels, scallops and crabs. Furthermore, NisosSergitsi and Diavates islets, Kompio, Kastria, Tigani, Karvalas and Prasonisi, total extent of 1250 acres, are protected natural reserves of the net Natura 2000 as they host big reproductive colonies of seabirds. Important archaeological places of the island are Poliochni at the east edge of Limnos, prehistoric Mirina, but also the cave of Filoktitis, while it’s worth a visit to Mirina’s castle which was built in the early 12th century, getting its final shape during the Venetian era.

Apart from the rich fauna and flora the island of Limnos provides the wonderful and clean beaches make it ideal for peaceful holidays. Two beautiful beaches shortly after the picturesque Moudros are the Small and the Big Fanaraki. Big rocks, natural pools and sea caves compose a unique scenery, whereas according to the fishermen’s words, if you are lucky, you can meet seals.

Shortly after Fanaraki and crossing a dirt road there is Charouli. Here the landscape is very different since the beach is covered by golden sand, while its waters are protected from winds and waves, something that make it an ideal choice for families with kids. The beautiful image of the beach is completed with prickly pear hills which are around.

Agios Ioannis, the beach Gomati, Parthenomitos, the Roman Gialos are some of the many beaches that the visitors of Limnoscan admire.
