Sitia

Beautiful Sitia is a coastal town of Lasithi municipality and constitutes the eastern town of Crete. It is located in the northeast part of the municipality, 70 km east of Agios Nikolaos Lasithi and is the seat of the homonymous municipality. It is the homeland of “Erotokritos” poet Vitsentzos Kornaros. Sitia provides a small airport, through which it is connected to the Aegean islands and it is a very nice tourist resort.

Places that present special interest to visitors is the Archaeological Museum where exhibits are presented since 3.500 B.C till 500 AD and come from the wider area of Sitia and of course Kazarma fortress which was one of the buildings of Medieval Sitia which was surrounded by a wall.

The wider area disposes many known beaches. For those who don’t wish to go far, an excellent choice is Sitia’s beach which is extended east of the harbour to the area of Petra. It is about a beach with sand and fine pebbles but relatively shallow waters. The beach is very well organised with bars and deck chairs, offers facilities for water sports whereas it is suitable for those who want something quieter since it provides many peaceful spots like those at the mouth of Pantelianos River.

One more very particular part of the outstanding Sitia forms the ruins of ancient town which is believed it was Iteia homeland of the wise Misonas.  The area is located in the peninsula of Tripitos while in the west of the archaeological place of Tripitos the rocky beach of Karavopetra is formed.  It is named after the rock that used to berth the ships in the past.
